What Self Driving in Rwanda Actually Feels Like
The first thing you notice is how clean everything is. Rwanda’s roads are swept, pothole-free on all main routes, and entirely free of the roadside debris common in neighbouring countries. It immediately feels safe and orderly.
The second thing is the hills. Rwanda earns its “land of a thousand hills” nickname completely. Every road outside Kigali winds up and down through terraced hillsides, tea plantations, and eucalyptus forests. It is spectacular — and it means you should always allow more time than Google Maps suggests, because the roads curve constantly.
The third thing is the boda bodas — motorcycle taxis. They are everywhere, especially in towns and on the Kigali–Musanze road. They weave, they are unpredictable, and they require constant awareness. Give them space and never try to overtake aggressively near one.
Rwanda Road Rules You Must Know
Drive on the right-hand side If you come from the UK, Ireland, South Africa, or other left-hand-drive countries, this is your biggest adjustment. Rwanda drives on the right — same as France, Germany, and the USA.
Speed limits — strictly enforced
- Residential areas and school zones: 30–40 km/h
- Town and city roads: 40–60 km/h
- National highways: 80 km/h
- Never assume the limit — look for signs at every town entry
Speed cameras — they are real Rwanda’s speed cameras are not decorative. They are fixed, digital, calibrated, and actively monitored. Seatbelts — mandatory for all Every passenger in the vehicle must wear a seatbelt at all times. No exceptions.
Mobile phones — hands-free only Using a handheld phone while driving is illegal and actively policed. Use a mount or Bluetooth only.
Alcohol — zero tolerance Rwanda enforces zero-tolerance drink driving. Do not drive after any alcohol consumption.
Police Checkpoints on Rwanda Roads
Rwanda has regular police checkpoints on all main roads. For most self-drive visitors, they are brief and polite. Here is what to expect and how to handle them:

Rwanda’s Best Roads for Self Drive
Kigali to Musanze (112 km) Rwanda’s most popular self-drive route. Wide, smooth, beautifully scenic. The last 30 km as you climb toward the Virunga volcanoes is breathtaking.
Kigali to Kayonza to Akagera (100 km) Flat and fast on the N1 eastern highway. The road transitions from smooth tarmac to Akagera’s red laterite dirt tracks at the park gate.
Kigali to Karongi via Gitarama (120 km) Rwanda’s most scenic highway. Follows a ridge with views dropping away on both sides. One of the best drives in East Africa.
Karongi to Rubavu along Lake Kivu (120 km) The lake road. Tarmac hugs the shoreline with Lake Kivu visible almost continuously. Allow 2.5 hours and stop often.
Musanze to Rubavu via Kinigi (85 km) A quieter route connecting Volcanoes NP to Lake Kivu. Mountain scenery and very few other vehicles.
Challenging Sections to Be Aware Of
Kigali rush hour traffic 7:30–9:00am and 5:00–7:00pm. The city slows significantly. Not dangerous — just slow.
Mountain roads near Volcanoes NP The approach to lodges and the Kinigi park headquarters involves steep, narrow tarmac that demands care, especially when wet.
Akagera northern sector tracks Inside the park. Laterite ridges, loose surface, steep in places. This is where 4WD becomes essential.
Rainy season road surfaces March–May and October–November. Main tarmac roads are fine. Dirt approaches to lodges and park gates can be slippery and rutted.
