The Rwanda 7 day road trip itinerary — Day by Day

Day 1: Arrive Kigali — City Orientation

Drive: 0 km Highlights: Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, Nyamirambo neighbourhood

Pick up your hire car from your hotel (we deliver free of charge). Spend your first day in Kigali — Rwanda’s clean, vibrant capital. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial for powerful historical context. Explore the colourful Kimironko Market for crafts and local food. In the evening, head to the Nyamirambo neighbourhood for dinner — it is Kigali’s most characterful area.

Overnight: Kigali Drive tip: Kigali has good roads but busy rush hours — avoid 7:30–9:00am and 5:00–7:00pm.

Day 2: Kigali → Akagera National Park (Big Five Safari)

Drive: 100 km | 2–2.5 hours Highlights: Lions, elephants, hippos, giraffes, Lake Ihema boat cruise

Leave Kigali early (5:00am) to enter Akagera through the South Gate at opening time (6:00am). Spend the morning on a self-drive game drive along Lake Ihema — hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and hundreds of bird species. Book the Lake Ihema boat cruise at the gate (7:30am or 9:00am departure). In the afternoon, drive north through the central savannah for giraffes, zebras, and topi. Aim to reach your northern accommodation by 4:00pm for a sunset game drive.

Overnight: Ruzizi Tented Lodge, Karenge Bush Camp, or Mutumba Hills Campsite (rooftop tent) Drive tip: Fuel up in Kayonza before entering the park.

Day 3: Akagera National Park — Lions and Rhinos (Full Day)

Drive: Inside park only Highlights: Lions, rhinos, Mutumba Hills viewpoint, night game drive

Dedicate a full day to Akagera’s northern sector — this is where lions and rhinos are found. Start your game drive at 6:00am from your camp. Consider hiring a park ranger-guide for the morning to help locate lions and rhinos (available at the Akagera North Gate area). In the afternoon, climb to the Mutumba Hills viewpoint for panoramic views over the park and Tanzania border. Book a night game drive through your lodge for leopard and genet sightings.

Overnight: Same lodge/camp in northern Akagera Drive tip: The northern sector tracks are the roughest in the park — take your time and engage 4WD.

Day 4: Akagera → Kigali → Musanze (Volcanoes National Park)

Drive: ~200 km | 3.5–4 hours total Highlights: Scenic drive through Rwanda’s thousand hills, Musanze town

Leave Akagera through the North or South Gate and drive back through Kigali (or bypass it on the ring road). Continue north-west to Musanze — the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park. The drive from Kigali to Musanze (112 km) is one of Rwanda’s most scenic — terraced hillsides, tea plantations, and the first views of the Virunga volcanoes appear as you approach. Arrive in Musanze by afternoon. Visit the Musanze Caves for an underground lake boat tour.

Overnight: Musanze (stay near the town for an easy early start) Drive tip: Book your gorilla trekking permit before this trip — they sell out months in advance. $1,500/person via rdb.rw.

Day 5: Volcanoes National Park — Gorilla Trekking

Drive: 20 min from Musanze to Kinigi HQ Highlights: Mountain gorilla trekking — once in a lifetime

Wake up at 5:30am. Drive to the park headquarters at Kinigi (20 minutes from Musanze) for the 7:00am briefing. You will be assigned to a gorilla family group and set off into the forest with a ranger. The trek takes between 1 and 8 hours depending on where the gorillas have moved. You get one full hour with the gorillas — an experience that is impossible to describe and impossible to forget. Return to Musanze for a late lunch and a well-earned rest.

Optional afternoon: Golden monkey trekking ($100/person — book via RDB). The Musanze Caves are also worth visiting.

Overnight: Musanze or begin drive south to Nyungwe area

Day 6: Musanze → Nyungwe Forest National Park

Drive: 225 km from Musanze | 4–4.5 hours Highlights: Chimpanzee trekking, canopy walkway, rainforest scenery

This is the longest driving day of the itinerary but also one of the most beautiful. Leave Musanze after breakfast and head south through Kigali (or bypass) and onwards to Nyungwe Forest in the south-west. The road to Nyungwe winds through tea plantations and misty hillsides — spectacular scenery the entire way. Arrive at your Nyungwe lodge in the afternoon. Book your chimpanzee trek and canopy walk for the morning at your lodge’s reception.

Overnight: Near Nyungwe Forest (Nyungwe Top View Hotel or similar) Drive tip: Stop in Huye (Butare) for lunch — Rwanda’s university town has good restaurants.

Day 7: Nyungwe Forest → Lake Kivu → Kigali

Drive: Nyungwe → Karongi (45 min) → Rubavu (2 hrs) → Kigali (2.5–3 hrs) OR Nyungwe → Kigali direct (4.5 hrs) Highlights: Chimpanzee trekking, canopy walk, Lake Kivu shores

Wake up early for your chimpanzee trekking experience in Nyungwe Forest ($100/person — arranged through your lodge). Chimpanzee treks start at 6:30am. Afterwards, drive 45 minutes to Karongi (Kibuye) on Lake Kivu for lunch on the lake shore — one of Rwanda’s most beautiful and peaceful spots. If time allows, take a short boat trip to one of the lake’s islands. Then drive back to Kigali (2.5–3 hours via Rubavu, or 2 hours direct). Return your hire car at your Kigali hotel.

Drive tip: The Lake Kivu road from Karongi to Rubavu is one of Rwanda’s most scenic drives — allow extra time and stop for photos.
