2-day gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park:
Day 1: Arrival and Preparation

- Arrive in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. If you’re already in Rwanda, plan to reach Kigali by early morning.
- Transfer to Volcanoes National Park, which is approximately a 2 to 3-hour drive from Kigali. I recommend using a 4×4 vehicle due to the terrain.
- Check into your accommodation near the park. Options range from luxury lodges to budget-friendly guest houses.
- Afternoon:
- Use the rest of the day to explore the nearby area or relax at your lodge. Consider visiting the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for a glimpse into local culture.
- Evening:
- Prepare your trekking gear. Be sure to have hiking boots, rain gear, and enough water. Early nights are recommended to be well-rested for the early morning start.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience
- Early Morning:
- Have an early breakfast and head to the park headquarters by 7:00 AM.
- Attend a briefing at the park headquarters. You’ll receive important information about gorilla trekking rules, safety guidelines, and what to expect during the trek.
- Join one of the trekking groups, which are typically limited to 8 people each. You’ll be assigned a group based on fitness levels and gorilla family location.
- Morning to Afternoon:
- Start your trek into the forest. The duration of the trek varies widely, from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location.
- Spend an hour with the gorilla family, observing their behavior and interactions under the guidance of your park ranger.
- Late Afternoon:
- Return to your accommodation to rest and freshen up.
- You can choose to stay another night near the park or proceed to your next destination.
